Current Influences
The way in which the results of this battle affects us in the current day are solidly linked and very dependable upon the initial effect it had on Greece. As discussed in Immediate Consequences, the rear-guard and battle in general were very successful in temporarily delaying the progress of the invasion across Central Greece. This then meant Greek forces were able to gather enough arms and force to successfully oppose the Persians, finally overcoming them in the Battle of Salamis. In this context we can see that without the delay the Persians suffered in Thermopylae and their inability to collaborate with their naval force in Artemisium a total invasion and conquering of Greece and surrounding lands was enormously likely. With this information it can be argued that Thermopylae was the straw that broke the camel's back, so to say that is was a very decisive battle in the Greco-Persian Wars and if without, the Greeks would very likely has been conquered.
Such a large portion of our culture today, from language, to architecture, to government, relies so heavily on the civilisation of Ancient Greece. Without the Battle of Thermopylae, all these influences would more likely come from Persia and its territories. Even influences from such places as Rome would no longer be around as without the defeat of Persia in the second Persian War, the empire would very likely have continued to grow and flourish even in the time of Rome.
To conclude, in spite of this battle being almost 2,500 years ago it affects our world today as all the influences from the ancient civilizations would likely have been replaced with that solely of Persia and it colonies.
In conclusion we can determine there is at least one extremely significant result of this battle that affects us in the current day. This would be our current government structure - in one word, democracy. If the Persians had succeeded in conquering Greece, at the very least democracy wouldn't be as developed as it is now, because they would have erased the progress that Athens had already made in the field of an equal government system.
